Be Race Ready this Spring!

I know, I know...it is cold, it is windy, it is dark. There are so many excuses not to run right now. But guess what? That spring race you signed up for, it is coming despite the weather and nothing feels worse than running a race untrained. It just sucks.

What doesn't suck? Training with friends. Roadrunners of Kansas City Saturday group runs are ongoing. In February, distances range from 10 miles to 18 miles and the start location for this month is Shawnee Mission North HS. Go to Events for details. Run anywhere from 2 miles up to the max course distance for that day. Membership for February - May 2017 is open. Register here.

Interested in picking up some speed? Winter Tuesday night speed sessions begin Feb 21 - March 28th. Register here.

Fight for It!

Fight for it because failure is not an option!

Fight for it because failure is not an option!

What are you fighting for? Success! Success comes in different forms for different people. It is YOUR success.

Who are you fighting? The naysayers, your self-doubt, the demon voice in your head that tells you to sleep in and skip your workout or to eat crap.

Why? Because success feels and tastes a hell of a lot better than failure.

How? With support of friends, your partner and your coach to hold you accountable. With a good solid training plan so you can do it right and with a physical therapist that is there for you when you "fall" because chances are you will "fall" a few times.

When? Now!

Where? Roadrunners of Kansas City and Coach Amy PT

Attention Endurance Nerds, PT Patients and Science Geeks!

Coach Amy of Coach Amy PT and Roadrunners of Kansas City is a closet journalism-major-dropper turned science geek, blogging about various physical therapy related topics at Coach Amy Says. Posts are educational, relevant to endurance athletes and physical therapy patients.

Posts are meant to be fun and hopefully not, but maybe sometimes, dry and boring. And they are meant to be shared to social media by her readers. Because an editor is not in the budget, there are a lot of grammar mistakes (see first sentence).

Coach Amy Says covers the latest scientific research like in the post, “Do Run Shoes Matter?” In her articles “What the BOSU?” and “What is Active Release Technique?”, she explains the mystery of various therapy (torture) techniques.

Informative blog topics include, “How to choose your Physical Therapist," “How to Ice Cup Massage” or “How to Safely Transition to a New Run Shoe.”

Posts also follow patients’ therapy experiences like this one: "PT Adventure Part I: Down and Out on the Slopes to Pre-surgery Rehab." In the future, Coach Amy will share updates on her private PT practice ventures and hopes to include guest bloggers. Stay tuned!

Jan 14th Run Cancelled - No Make UP Sunday

Run cancelled today. Icy course conditions. Do not run outside until will have a proper thaw. You risk a fall as well as musculoskeletal injuries that could take you out for the rest of the season.

If conditions are safe to drive to the gym, consider cross training at the for a total amount of time you would have spent running. Again, mix it up e.g. 30 min. ellipitical, 30 min. bike, 30 min indoor track, 30 min. swim...

At home, indoor bike trainer, treadmill if you have one. Limit treadmill to 30 min. or less. If you are battling injury avoid treadmill altogether.

A thaw is expected for Monday. That is a good day to run long if it works in your life schedule. Otherwise, don't try to "make it up".  Our long run January 21st will be 12 miles - same course/ map we intended to run today. Events page will be updated today.

Do NOT worry about your training this weekend if you cannot get it in. One weekend of training isn't going to make or break your spring race. Enjoy the time off!

Update on Weather Forecast and Long Run Plans

It is not looking good for our group run this weekend. I recommend sneaking a run in
tomorrow morning before armageddon. Stay safe! I will make an official
announcement and update tomorrow, but it is safe to assume we will cancel.

National weather service has issued an...

Ice Storm Warning now in effect from noon Friday to midnight
CST Sunday night...

* timing... light precipitation will begin Friday afternoon...
with periods of freezing rain through Sunday afternoon or
evening.

* Ice accumulations... total ice accumulations during the multi-
day period of one-quarter to three-quarters of an inch.

* Main impact... major impacts to travel are likely as ice
accumulates on area roadways. Bridges and overpasses will be
most susceptible to ice accretion. Ice accumulation on trees
and powerlines may result in scattered power outages.
